Dracula’s Castle, Transylvania –  Romania

Transylvania. The name itself is enough to send shivers down the spine of even the most fearless adventurer. Now imagine being there, in person, when the clock strikes midnight… on Halloween! Romania ranks as one of Europe’s most charming and underexplored regions, charming visitors with its spectacular Gothic architecture, enveloping forests, and friendly people. But as idyllic as it is by day, the real fun happens at night – particularly Halloween. Think you’re not afraid of the dark? You will be.

Oaxaca –  Mexico

Dia de los Muertos celebration

On Halloween, the streets of Oaxaca become an enormous street festival for the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations. Hallowing ancient Aztec and Mayan legends, costumed people pay visits to local cemeteries, and decorate the streets with flowers, skulls, and skeletons. There are celebrations nationwide for this important Mexican holiday, but the biggest party is in the Xócalo main square in Oaxaca with mountains of food, drinks and dancing throughout the night.

Christ Church –  Barbados

Overlooking the sparkling Caribbean Sea, the Chase Vault is the site of one of the most chilling mysteries in Christ Church, Barbados. The coffins of the wealthy Chase family were found to be tampered with and pillaged over the centuries, but there is no evidence that the massive lead door of the vault had ever been disturbed. The ghosts of two family members are said to haunt the vault, and the tomb makes for a spooky stop on an otherwise sunny and cheery island. Do you have what it takes to explore such a mystery?

Paris – France

Paris is known as the “City of Lights,” but there’s also a dark side to the French capital! Paris is picturesque. Paris is romantic. Paris is graceful but Paris is also… creepy! Even if Halloween is a much smaller affair in France than it is in the States, Paris is a fantastic place to spend Halloween.

The Catacombs of Paris

Probably the most haunting of locations ‘The catacombs of Paris is located 20 meters below the streets of Paris, The Catacombs are a subterranean labyrinth of more than 300 kilometers of skull-lined tunnels — although only a couple of kilometers are open to the public.

On the 31st of October you should go for a walk through 1.7 km of galleries whose walls are made entirely of bones, skulls and skeletons! If that’s not enough to make you scream then you be welcomed by the entrance sign reading “Arrette! C’est ici l’empire de la mort”, meaning “Stop! This is the empire of the dead” and it’s one threshold that takes guts and courage to cross. Do you think you have what it takes to tread the sinister Catacombs of Paris? See you there on Halloween!
